Thumb Sucking & Your Child’s Teeth

Thumb or finger sucking is a normal habit that some babies develop before they are born. It soothes and helps babies connect and explore their environment. In a natural bite, the upper teeth raise to protrude the lower teeth. However, it is possible that pressure from the thumb, pacifier, or finger against the gums prevents normal tooth drilling and also jaw growth. 

Many thumb-suckers generate an "open bite," which means that the teeth don't protrude when the child clenches; rather, there is an open place between the lower and upper teeth. That's why thumb sucking is clearly something we should keep a focus on, even if we don't desire to interfere too early.

Here are some things you can try to stop thumb sucking :

Praise and appreciation: Explain to your child why it's so important not to suck their thumb and think of ways to reward them for not doing it. Instead of arguing when you see a thumb in your child's mouth, always bring back gentle reminders and praise them when they stop.

Comfort and distraction:  Children have several triggers for thumb sucking. Does your kid lead to do this when stressed or tired? If so, some additional hugs might help, or activity to retain those tiny hands busy.

Thumb sucking is just one of the reasons why it's important to maintain a regular schedule of your child's dental check-ups from the age of 1.
