The Twilight Samurai

Japanese Title: Tasogare Seibei
Release Year in Japan: 2002
Release Year in the U.S.: 2004

Director: Yoji Yamada
Casts: Hiroyuki Sanada (Seibei Iguchi), Rie Miyazawa (Tomoe)

Definitely one of the "MUST-SEE" Japanese movies in recent years. Don't have old "samurai" movies in mind to watch this film - it re-wrote the rules of the samurai movies in Japan. The story focuses on the human side of a humble man who happens to be a samurai and the sweet love tale between him and his childhood sweetheart, and yet the severe rule of the swordsman looms over them. Just a great combination of the traditional samurai movie value handed down from Kurosawa and the new realism in the eyes of the modern viewers. The acting of Hiroyuki Sanada is just simply superb, with his amazing contrast of action ability and quiet spiritual expression.

The film swept 12 of 14 categories of Japanese Academy Awards in 2003, and was also nominated in the U.S. Academy Awards Foreign Language Film Category in 2004.
