"Yotsuya Kwaidan" is a popular classic horror story in Japan, and this movie is based on a novel by Natsuhiko Kyogoku as a new interpretation of the classic. Iwa's face was deformed due to small pox, but she was living with pride and straight heart, and her husband Iyemon loved her deeply. Iyemon's boss was interested in Iwa before her desease, and now he gets jealous to them and the tragedy unfolds.

The movie is directed by a prominent play director Yukio Ninagawa with his usual theatrical beauty , combined with dark side of human emotions, and reminded me of Ninagawa's version of "Hamlet" stage play. Acting of the main actors, including Koyuki and Karasawa, are highly acclaimed, even though some fans complain that the story is a bit difficult to follow.
