New-wave samurai/sword action film, featuring the world's strongest young
female assasin in early 17th century. Azumi is a young orphaned girl who
has been trained to kill people from a childhood by Master Gessai, to eliminate
the enemies who plot to start wars against the Shogun. The story is based
on Yu Koyama's manga (comic), and the film style is a combination of "Mad
Max"-like exagerated actions and manga-like fantasy martial arts,
stark departure from Japanese traditional samurai sword action films. Heroin
is played by a pop idol Aya Ueto, with a rich supporting team including
the eccentric enemy assassin by Joe Odagiri, Master by Yoshio Harada and
enemy leader Naoto Takenaka.
Joe Odagiri won Rookie of the Year award and Aya Ueto was nominated in
Best Actress category in 2004 Japan Academy Award.
