Started off as assistant for Banmei Takahashi, Koji Wakamatsu and Kazuyuki Izutsu, Suo debuted as a director with "Abnormal Family" in 1984. Since then, he is loved by Japanese fans for his comedy-human drama movies, "Fancy Dance" (1989), "Sumo Do, Sumo Don't" (1991) and "Shall We Dance?" (1996). He wrote the scripts of all these movies as well, and is credited for the original writer in the Hollywood version "Shall We Dance?".
